Thematic dossier: "Lusophonic Modernities"
During the modern re-examination of the epic genre, a series of studies focuses on understanding the temporality of the epic (Silva & Ramalho, 2007, Neiva 2008, 2012). These studies take a diachronic perspective of the genre and seek to recognize its historicity, observing in this process a paradox that affects the contemporary epic: on the one hand, the predominance of a critical vision of Hegelian inflection, which, born in XIX, begins to see the epic as a genre inappropriate for modern values and practices, having been replaced by the novel; on the other hand, it appears that the epic genre and / or the elements that constitute it remain productive, continuously renewed and reconfigured. Observing this dichotomy, this issue of Épicas invites authors to submit articles that explore this resizing in epic poetry in the Portuguese language, from the 19th century to the present day, through long stories incorporating epic elements , or through a renewal of formal structures that characterized the epic.
